What Family Means

It is day two, and I am SO excited for what is to come. I am honestly having a great time, and it felt great getting to run the show with my cast. There is an energy when I walk into Burning Coal's theatre that just brightens my day.

Now, this all brings me to a moment I had with my younger sister recently. She was nervously getting ready to audition for a part in Seussical at a local theatre, and she really wanted a lead. I sat there and asked, "why do you want to be in this show?" Unexpectedly she responded, "so I can get a lead?" I was a little dumbfounded and proceeded to say that you should audition for a show because you WANT to. You audition because you understand theatre is fun: theatre makes you smile, laugh!

That is just what I am rediscovering with the current Conservatory: the great sense of fun in theatre. I haven't been in a show in a little over three months, and it wasn't until today that I realized how much I really missed it. I am having the fun that only a fellow actor can describe. And it feels good!

Today we learned the art of breathing, stage pictures/the actor's relationship to his surroundings, and projection. It was a little challenging because I faced one of my old enemies in one of the stage picture games: overthinking. Sometimes I can try to overanalyze things too much to find something "clever" instead of giving in to the moment. Even though that wasn't the main point of the exercises we did, it was one of the times when I really caught myself doing. For now on I will try trust my impulses better. These "silly" theatre games can really teach you a lot about yourself if you let them. I look forward to the challenges to come! See you all tomorrow!
